The San Diego State men's basketball team will open the prestigious 2008 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout against Western Carolina on Thursday, Nov. 27, at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska. The four-day tournament will also feature host school Alaska Anchorage, Hampton, Louisiana Tech, Northern Illinois, Portland State and Seattle.

The top half of the bracket begins on Wednesday, Nov. 26, with Alaska Anchorage playing host to Hampton and Portland State taking on Northern Illinois. The bottom half will pit Seattle and Louisiana Tech against each other, while the Aztecs take on the Catamounts.

Second-round action will take place on Friday, Nov. 28, while both championship and consolation title games are set for Saturday, Nov. 29. Times for all games will be announced at a later date.

The last time SDSU traveled to The Last Frontier, the Aztecs took third place at the 2005 BP Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks by winning two of three games.

In multiple-game in-season events under head coach Steve Fisher, San Diego State has enjoyed much success. In the last two years, the Aztecs went 6-0 en route to winning the World Vision Classic (2007) and the Shamrock Invitational (2006). Since Fisher's arrival on Montezuma Mesa, SDSU has a cumulative record of 11-3 in multiple-game in-season events. Overall, Fisher, who is entering his 18th full season, is 21-7 in such events.

Past Shootout champions include Arizona, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan State, North Carolina, Syracuse and UCLA.
